Volunteer Opportunity: Camp Tule Counselor-In-Training

Classification: Temporary (June 15 - July 28, 2026), Volunteer
Location: Laguna Environmental Center, Santa Rosa, CA.

Summary

Counselors-in-Training (CIT) volunteer during Camp Tule sessions to help lead games and environmental education activities, and to create fun, safe and meaningful nature-based experiences for children while building their own environmental knowledge, leadership and job skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Exemplify and foster our core values of integrity, generosity of spirit, collaboration, innovation, passion, and sustainability to help promote healthy child development and to ensure a joyful week of connecting to nature through inquisitiveness for each camper.
  • Assist in supervising campers during both structured and unstructured activities and explorations.
  • Assist Camp Naturalists and Counselors in teaching environmental education activities, playing nature-based games, crafts and group play.
  • Keep campers safe and happy by using positive motivation techniques, work within the Camp prescribed codes of conduct, and follow all safety guidelines
  • Attend morning and afternoon meetings with all Camp staff and volunteers to reflect, plan, and prepare for the day’s activities.

Required Education and Skills
  • Minimum age requirement: 13.5 years.
  • Positive attitude with an enthusiastic desire to be a role-model, friend, and teacher to younger children.

  • Strong cooperation skills.
  • Demonstrated patience, compassion, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Capacity to assume accountability and collaborate within a team setting.
Desired Education and Skills
  • demonstrated interest in the natural world and the Laguna wetland ecosystem.
  • Leadership skills or a desire to develop them.
  • Experience care-taking children.
  • Experience participating in a club or on a sports team (or other activities outside of school).
  • Previous camp experiences either as a camper, Counselor-in-Training, or Counselor.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus.
  • CPR/AED Certified Training a plus.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

The physical demands outlined here reflect the requirements that employees must meet to successfully carry out the essential functions of this volunteer position. Volunteers must be able to perform physical tasks such as walking, running, or hiking over rough terrain, covering approximately 5 miles throughout the day. They should be comfortable working in various weather conditions, including cold, heat, and wind, with the possibility of encountering poisonous plants and biting or stinging insects, such as ticks. Vision requirements include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and maintaining focus. Volunteers must communicate effectively with campers ages 6-10 to provide necessary instructions and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques in a positive manner.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

CITs volunteer during 1, 2, or 3 sessions based on their own summer schedule and the needs of Camp. The usual volunteer day is from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm, as scheduled below. If tardiness or an absence is expected, prior arrangements MUST be made with the Camp Director.
  • REQUIRED Camp Staff and VolunteerTraining: Wednesday – Thursday, June 17-18, 2026 (9:00 am – 3:30 pm)
  • Camp Session 1: (SOAR for ages 11-13, No CITs this week)
  • Camp Session 2: Monday – Friday, July 6-10
  • Camp Session 3: Monday – Friday July 13-17
  • Camp Session 4: Monday – Friday, July 20-24
  • Camp Debrief, Clean-up & Celebration: Monday, July 27

Time Commitment

Counselors in Training are required to participate in camp staff/volunteer training, and commit to volunteering during 1, 2, or 3 full weeks of camp depending on the needs of Camp Tule and the availability of the Counselor-in-Training.

Compensation

None. This is a temporary, voluntary position with a defined beginning and end date.

Travel

CITs must have reliable transportation to the Laguna Environmental Center each day and are expected to arrive ready for Camp by 8:00 am and to remain on site until the conclusion of the camp day unless prior arrangements have been made with the Camp Director. NOTE: there is no bus service to the Laguna Environmental Center. Address of Campsite is 900 Sanford Rd, Santa Rosa, CA 95401.
